PORTO, April 15, 2018
Attila Balazs of Hungary clinched his 29th ITF Pro Circuit title, his 30th overall, at the third stop of the $25,000 Cascais Next Gen Tour in Porto. The top seed eased past Pedro Cachín of Argentina 6-0, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final held on clay at the Clube de Tenis do Porto.
Balazs, who only dropped one set en route to the title match, capitalized on five of his 10 break point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 11 minutes. The World No. 175 earns $3,600 in prize money as well as 25 ATP ranking points.
Balazs said afterwards that he hopes to have played in Portugal “the last or the penultimate Futures tournament of my career”. The 29-year-old, who struggled with injuries in the past, won the Palermo Challenger in 2010 and reached a career high ranking at World No. 153 the same, wants to compete primarily on the ATP Challenger Tour in the future again. Next up, however, will be his home tournament in Budapest, which is part of the ATP World Tour 250 series.
On Saturday, Germain Gigounon of Belgium and Tristan Lamasine from France captured the doubles title. The No. 3 seeds fought past the all-Portuguese-combination of Francisco Cabral and Tiago Cacao 5-7, 6-3, 11-9. The final lasted one hour and 28 minutes.
