KITZBÜHEL, June 19, 2018
Organizers of the Generali Open announced on Tuesday the official acceptance list for this year’s ATP 250 clay-court event, held in Kitzbühel from 29 July to 4 August 2018.
Local hero and World No. 7 Dominic Thiem is seeking his first title on home soil but will face strong competition, as four former top 10-cracks entered the tournament: Frenchmen Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.
The veterans will be joined by a couple of young guns led by World No. 49 Maximilian Marterer of Germany. With Philipp Kohlschreiber, Robin Haase and Guillermo Garcia-López three former Kitzbühel champions will also return to Austria.
“It’s great to see so many top-players coming to Kitzbühel this year. Fans can expect high quality matches right from the start of the week”, tournament director Alexander Antonitsch is pleased with the line-up.
With a cut-off at No. 81, Thiem is the only Austrian, who made the direct acceptance. Gerald Melzer is the highest ranked local player appearing on the alternate list.
“As always, we can only award two wild cards. This will be a very difficult task again this year, as some Austrian players have recently attracted attention on clay. There are still some things to be done in the coming weeks, and we will take some time to make the final decision,” Antonitsch said.
