The remaining four second round matches were played on Day 4 at the 13th edition of the ATP Challenger San Benedetto Tennis Cup with seven locals in action.
Salvatore Caruso won the first all-Italian-affair, beating Lorenzo Giustino in two tie-breaks 7-6, 7-6. In an even encounter, both players broke the opponent’s service four times but it was the 22-year-old being more solid with his first serve to seal victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
Caruso will face another compatriot in the quarterfinals, as Matteo Donati defeated Gianluca Naso 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. Donati hit seven aces and converted four of his 14 break point chances to reach the stage of the final eight after two hours and 37 minutes.
In Thursday’s third all-Italian-clash Marco Cecchinato prevailed, winning 6-1, 6-2 against Matteo Viola. The 22-year-old from Palermo only had to save one break point and capitalized on six of his own to close the match after only 67 minutes. Cecchinato, who captured the ATP Challenger title in Turin earlier this year, will have the chance to advance to his ninth semi-finals of the season and was understandably happy afterwards.
“I am very pleased to reach this stage of the tournament. Playing Filippo in the quarters would be nice,” he told.
His wish came true, as Filippo Volandri defeated Andreas Beck in the final match of the day 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in one hour and 35 minutes.
