WIMBLEDON, July 10, 2018
For the first time since 1931 two German women will play in the Wimbledon semif-finals, as Julia Görges will join Angelique Kerber in the stage of the final four. The 13th-seeded from Bad Oldesloe had never made it past the third round in her 10 previous appearances at the All England Club and had gone out in the first round for the past five years.
On Tuesday afternoon, however, Görges secured a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 20 seed Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands. The World No. 13 won 72 per cent of her first service points and hit 36 winners to prevail after one hour and 57 minutes.
A brilliant comeback victory…

“Wow, it’s pretty amazing,” Görges said afterwards. “I don’t know what to say right now. I just tried to fight for every point. It’s never easy playing a friend. I don’t know what to say right now.
“After five years of first-round losses here, I think I’ve grown a lot to get to the semi-finals. It’s an honour to play Serena. But every match starts from zero.”

Serena beats Giorgi
Goerges will next face seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams on Thursday. The 36-year-old from the United States edged past Camila Giorgi of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“I feel good, I feel like I did better today, I had to,” Williams told BBC Sport.
“This is only my fourth tournament back so I don’t feel pressure, I don’t feel I have to win this. I still have a long way to go to be where I was.”
Williams holds a 3-0 head-to-head record over Görges, with the most recent victory coming in the third round of the French Open last month.
