Top seed Dominic Thiem continued his quest for a third clay-court title of the year when he beat John Millman of Australia in the second round of the German Tennis Championships 2018 in Hamburg on Thursday. The World No. 8 secured a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory in the third meeting between the two.

Thiem saved all three break points he faced, converting four of his own to advance in one hour and 12 minutes.

Thiem will next face Nicolas Jarry. The 22-year-old from Chile benefited from a walkover, as Frenchman Richard Gasquet was forced to withdraw from the match.

No. 3 seed Pablo Carreno Busta had a familiar foe to contend with in the second round, as he took on Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia. The two have met three times at Tour-level, each time on clay, and Bedene has emerged victorious twice, including a five-set win at Roland Garros in 2016. This time, the 29-year-old Ljubljana native had to retire due to a lower back injury trailing 6-2, 4-0.

Carreno Busta will next play Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili, who edged past 2016 Rothenbaum finalist Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay 7-6(6), 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 43 minutes.
