Berrettini Caps Dream Week In Gstaad

Matteo Berrettini has capped his dream week in Gstaad by lifting the trophy of the J. Safra Sarasin Swiss Open. The 22-year-old Italian, who hadn’t reached an ATP World Tour quarterfinal before, upset the tournament’s No. 2 Roberto Bautista-Agut 7-6(9), 6-4 in Sunday’s title match.

Berrettini fired 17 aces, winning 85 per cent of his first service points to secure his maiden triumh on the ATP World Tour after one hour and 45 minutes. The Rome native didn’t drop his serve all week.

“I am really happy, I have to stay focussed because of the doubles [final] and not think about this, but I am really happy,” said Berrettini, who also took the doubles crown alongside fellow Italian Daniele Bracciali later in the day.

The youngster takes away €89,435 in prize money as well as 250 ATP-Ranking points to reach a new career high at World No. 54 on Monday.

“I want to congratulate Matteo. He played a great week and he has a great future in front of him. He deserved to win today,” said Bautista Agut, who was seeking his first titel in the Swiss Alps. “I always like to play in Gstaad, it’s a beautiful event and I hope to come back next year.”
