Clarke Triumphs In Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, July 30, 2018

Jay Clarke has joined the winners’ circle on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning his first title on Sunday. The 20-year-old Briton lifted the trophy at the 25th edition of the Levene Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger. Clarke upset top seed Jordan Thompson in the final of the $75,000 hard-court event.

Clarke won 78 per cent of his first service points 52 per cent of the total points played to seal a 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 6-4 victory in two hours and 56 minutes.

Clarke earns $10,800 in prize money and collects 80 ATP-Ranking points. The Derby native is up to a career-high No. 175 on Monday, rising 50 spots.

“It’s been an amazing week. I want to thank everyone for coming out and making it so special,” Clarke said. “I’ll remember this one forever because it’s my first title at this level. I’m really happy.”

Gerard and Marcel Granollers of Spain took the doubles title. The siblings defeated Alejandro Gomez of Colombia and Caio Silva from Brazil 7-6(2), 6-4 in the final. The encounter lasted one hour and 24 minutes.
