Three of the top four seed at the Isar Open advanced to the second round on Tuesday. The tournament’s No. 1 Jan-Lennard Struff emerged victorious from the all-German affair with fellow wild card entry Daniel Masur.

The 28-year-old from Warstein fired 13 aces, winning 78 per cent of his first service points to secure a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) win in one hour and 55 minutes.

Struff will next take on compatriot Mats Moraing, who fought past Guilherme Clezar of Brazil 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Jiri Vesely came back from a set down to overcome Alexey Vatutin of Russia 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-0. The No. 2 seed from the Czech Republic won 54 per cent of the total points played to prevail after two hours and 34 minutes. Next up for Vesely will be Belgian qualifier Kimmer Coppejans.

Jurgen Zopp also had to go the distance. The third favourite from Estonia edged out Pedro Cachín of Argentina 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The World No. 98 capitalized on four of his 14 break point chances to advance in one hour and 46 minutes. Zopp will play Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in the second round. The 19-year-old from Stockholm rallied past fellow teenager Rudolf Molleker of Germany 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

No. 4 seed Paolo Lorenzi, however, fell in the opening round. The 34-year-old Italian just arrived at the Tennis Club Großhesselohe after lifting his 20th trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour in Sopot and lost to qualifier Gianluca Mager 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. The encounter lasted exactly two hours of play.

“Gianluca was playing better than me today,” Lorenzi had to admit. “But I am happy to be here, as this is a great tournament held at a very nice club. So I hope to do better next year.”
