Main draw action at the Tennis Open Stadtwerke Meerbusch kicked off on Monday led by two Spaniards, who advanced to the second round of the €43,000 ATP Challenger clay-court event.
Bernabé Zapata Miralles knocked off No. 7 seed Belgian Arthur de Greef 6-4, 6-2. The 21-year-old from Valencia won 76 per cent of his first service points and 59 per cent of the total points played to prevail in one hour and 18 minutes.
Next up for Zapata Miralles will be Frenchman Elliot Benchetrit, who eased past Italian veteran Riccardo Bellotti 6-2, 6-1 in 51 minutes.
Mario Vilella Martínez edged ozt Filippo Baldi of Italy 6-1, 7-6(9). The 23-year-old Elche native capitalized on five of his nine break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 33 minutes. Vilella Martínez will next face sixth seed Filip Horansky of Slovakia, who beat Austrian teenager Jurij Rodionov 6-4, 6-1. The encounter lasted 66 minutes.
