COMO, September 3, 2018
Salvatore Caruso is the champion of the Città di Como. The 25-year-old Italian beat Chile’s Christian Garin 7-5, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final of the €43,000 clay-court event.
The schedule of the play was affected by the bad weather at Lake Como and Caruso had to play the semis as well as the title match the same day. Before Caruso earned victory against Garin, the World No. 218 had to fight past compatriot Matteo Donati 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in more than two hours of play.
In the final, Caruso capitalized on five of his 14 break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 42 minutes. After winning five ITF Pro Circuit title – all on home soil – he finally claimed his maiden ATP Challenger trophy.
Caruso earns €9,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP-Ranking points.
Earlier in the day, Andre Begemann and Dustin Brown rallied past Martin Klizan and Filip Polasek of Sloavia to take the doubles crown. The all-German combination won the final 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in one hour and 12 minutes.
