Chengdu Open seeds Gael Monfils and Mikhail Kukushkin indulged in a slice of Chengu’s cultural history this morning at the Du Fu Thatched Cottage park. The national heritage site is a 24-acre park and museum in honour of the Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, which is located at the western outskirts of Chengdu.

Frenchman Monfils and Kazakhstani Kukushkin participated in a traditional painting activity amidst the picturesque gardens, winding streams, interwoven bridges and pavilions that were constructed in classical architectural styles to immerse the park in traditional cultural vibes.

The 30-year-old Kukushkin, who was truly enjoying his time within the enigmatic park and shrine, also read out aloud one of Du Fu’s most famous poems entitled Jué Jù, which translates as ‘A Four Line Stanza’.

“It was awesome, getting to visit the park and doing the traditional painting and drawing. The culture in China is amazing and it was a good experience to do something that you’ve never done in your life. I’m thankful for the tournament for providing such an opportunity. Everything about this tournament has been great so far. It’s my first time here but I can say it’s one of the best on tour,” said Kukushkin.

Monfils was equally taken by the beautiful atmosphere within Du Fu: “I’ve really enjoyed the morning. This park is incredible and it has a lot of positive energy. For me to be here in Chengdu for the first time and getting to visit a park like this, I consider myself really lucky. The experience with the painting teacher was great. Even though it was short, it was really nice to learn about this amazing culture.”
