STOCKTON, October 2, 2018
On the first day of main draw competition at the Stockton Pro Open, the qualifying field was determined and doubles play began at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
Wild card William Blumberg became the first qualifier to reach the Main Draw on Monday, defeating Pablo Vivero Gonzalez 6-4, 6-1. Alexander Sarkissian took the next spot in the Main Draw by topping three-seed Harri Heliovaara in three sets. Sarkissian dropped in set one, 4-6, but rallied back in sets two and three to claim the 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Tommy Paul quickly claimed the third qualifying spot to reach the Main Draw, defeating Isaiah Strode in two straight, 6-3, 6-3. Patrick Kypson rounded out the qualifying Main Draw, defeating Dayne Kelly 6-4, 6-1.
In the main draw, fourth seed Lloyd Harris defeated Dominik Koepfer 6-3, 6-4 to be the first to move on to the next round. Thai-Son Kwiatkkowski battled back from a 3-6 first set, to claim sets two and three 7-6 (5), 6-4, to eliminate Lucas Miedler from singles play.
Christopher Eubanks went up against Cem Ilkel, and came out with a 6-4 first set victory. He went on to take the second set in a 7-6 (4) match. No. 8 seed Marc Polmans quickly claimed his spot in the next round defeating Jay Clarke in two straight 6-3, 6-0.
The next two matches went three sets a piece. Mitchell Krueger went up against John-Patrick Smith, and fell in the first set 3-6. He rapidly battled back in the second to claim a 6-3 second set, and followed it up with a 6-4 victory in the third set. Liam Broady pulled off the first upset of the Main Draw, defeating Henri Laaksonen. Broady trailed 1-0 in the match, dropping the first set 3-6, but fought his way back in sets two and three to claim the victory 6-4, 6-4.
No. 6 seed Noah Rubin claimed the last match of the day, ousting Jenson Brooksby 6-2, 6-4.
