HOUSTON, November 15, 2018
The sun finally made an appearance at the Oracle Challenger Series in Houston, as four US-Americans (two men and two women) advanced to the quarterfinal round on Friday, where 16-year-old Whitney Osuigwe will take on the winner of the match between top seed Belinda Bencic and Shuai Peng. Baylor University sophomore Roy Smith will face Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, who knocked out Italian veteran and No. 4 seed Paolo Lorenzi 6-4, 6-4.
Osuigwe, who battled through the qualifying of the $125,000 WTA event, rallied past the tournament’s No. 6 Varvara Lepchenko from the United States 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The teenager capitalized on four of her eight break point chances to prevail after one hour and 53 minutes. Osuigwe’s victory also secures her a wild card into the main draw of the Australian Open this January.
