HOUSTON, November 16, 2018
The quarterfinals have been set at the Oracle Challenger Series in Houston, as only eight men and eight women remain. In the biggest match on Thursday, former Grand Slam doubles champion Peng Shuai took down the No. 1 seed of the WTA $125,000 event Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.
The 32-year-old wild card entry from China won 51 per cent of the total points played to secure a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory in two hours and 23 minutes. Shuai will meet 16-year-old US-American qualifier Whitney Osuigwe in the next round.
On the men’s side, four seeds are still alive, including the No. 2 of the $150,000 ATP Challenger event Bradley Klahn from the United States and 39-year-old Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, the all-time aces leader on the ATP World Tour. Karlovic will face eighth seeded German Dominik Koepfer in the stage of the final eight. Klahn will take on fellow US-American Evan Song.
Fifth favourite Jason Jung from Taipei will meet Polish youngster Kamil Majchrzak and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski will oppose fellow US-American and 20-year-old wild card entry Roy Smith.
