SYDNEY, January 12, 2019

Alex de Minaur clinched his maiden trophy on the ATP Tour. The 19-year-old Australian took the title of the Sydney International. De Minaur overcame Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-5, 7-6(5) in Saturday’s singles final.

The Sydney-born teenager won 75 per cent of his first service points and broke his opponent’s serve three times to prevail after two hours and five minutes.

“It’s surreal. I couldn’t think of a better place to get my first win,” said De Minaur, who has become the youngest winner in Sydney since mentor Lleyton Hewitt claimed the title in 2001. “It’s been tough, because I have played a couple of finals and things haven’t gone my way.

“To finally be able to take that step further and get my first win, it’s something that’s really special in front of friends and family and on the courts I grew up [on]. [These are] definitely memories that are going to last forever.”

Earlier in the day, Jamie Murray from Great Britain and Brazilian Bruno Soares lifted their second Sydney International trophy, beating the all-Colombian combination of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4, 6-3. The final lasted one hour and 15 minutes.

“[It was] a great week for us in Sydney,” said Murray. “[It is the] perfect preparation to win a tournament going into the Australian Open. We played a lot of good tennis this week and beat a lot of good teams.”
