VANCOUVER, August, 19, 2015
In a three-hour match that thrilled the crowd at the Odlum Brown VanOpen on Tuesday evening, former World No. 10 Ernests Gublis of Latvia was knocked out of the ATP Challenger event by Illya Marchenko of Ukraine 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(2). It’s the third time in four career meetings between the two that Marchenko has come out on top. The match saw Gulbis hit 14 aces, but also 10 double faults.
Gulbis is one of three seeded players on the men’s side to be eliminated in the first round. Top seed Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania fell 6-4, 6-1 to Jurgen Zopp of Estonia and No. 5 seed Go Soeda of Japan was forced to withdraw due to an injury, giving Romanian Marius Copil a berth in the second round.
