Two wild card entries headlined Monday’s first-round action at the Mouratoglou Open in Sophia Antipolis, France. 17-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti claimed his first main draw match win at ATP Challenger level, rallying past Karim-Mohamed Maamoun of Egypt 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Court 1.

The Carrara native, who defeated Emilio Nava to win the Australian Open boys’ singles title this year, converted four of his eight break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 47 minutes.

Musetti, who has been practicing at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy for three years, is the first player born in 2002 to win an ATP Challenger match. The teenager will next take on No. 8 seed Alexey Popyrin of Australia, winner of the 2017 French Open junior singles title.

Earlier in the day on Court Central, Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech knocked out former World No. 12 Viktor Troicki of Serbia, winning 6-4, 6-2, The 22-year-old wild card entry saved the only break point he faced, capitalizing on three of his own seven chances to prevail after one hour and 23 minutes. Rinderknech, currently ranked World No. 483, will next challenge No. 12 seeded Italian Filippo Baldi.

Heller, Brown advance

Peter Heller, former No. 1 in the ITF World Tennis Ranking, also earned his first ATP Challenger main draw match win. The 26-year-old from Germany overcame Uladzimir Igantik from Belarus 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). Next up for Heller will be Italian veteran and No. 10 seed Simone Bolelli.

Dustin Brown set a second round clash on Tuesday with the tournament’s No. 2 Robin Haase from the Netherlands. The 34-year-old German eased past French ITF-entry Baptiste Crepatte 6-4, 6-2 in 63 minutes. Top seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert will step into action on Wednesday. The World No. 49 from France awaits the winner of the encounter between Nino Serdarusic of Croatia and Mohamed Safwat of Egypt.
