The top seeds at the € 42,500 ATP Challenger in Manerbio advanced on Friday to the semi-finals.
The tournament’s first seed Daniel Muῆoz de la Nava overcame Italian wild card Federico Gaio, winning 6-1, 1-6, 7-6. The 33-year-old Spaniard withstood 14 aces and won 76% of his first service points to seal victory in two hours and seven minutes.
Muῆoz de la Nava will take on Filippo Volandri next. The eighth seeded Italian defeated his fellow countryman Salvatore Caruso, winning 6-1, 6-3. Volandri saved the only break point he faced and capitalized on five of his own to advance after one hour and 15 minutes.
Second favourite Andrej Kuznetsov beat Juan Carlos Saez, winning 7-6, 6-0. The world number 118 from Russia fired seven aces and converted all of his five break point chances he gained to close the match after one hour and 14 minutes.
Kuznetsov will face Lorenzo Giustino in the semi-finals. The Italian qualifier knocked out third seed Kenny de Schepper, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Giustino had 17 opportunities to break serve and used three of them to end the encounter after two hours and 13 minutes.
