NÜRNBERG, May 7, 2019
Anna-Lena Friedsam and Sabine Lisicki have been both awarded a wild card into the main draw of the Nürnberger Versicherungscup. This was announced by the tournament’s organizers on Tuesday.
Friedsam had been sidelined from the courts for almost the entire season last year due to a shoulder injury but made her comeback at the beginning of 2019. The 25-year-old German clinched the doubles title alongside Mona Barthel at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart two weeks ago.
“I am really happy with my development, as I’m improving steadily. However, the most important thing is to be fit and healthy again,” Friedsam said.
Lisicki, a former World No. 12, is currently ranked at World No. 298 and wants to get back to her best.
“I am very happy that Sabine Lisicki will return to the tournament for the first time in three years. She is still a figurehead for tennis in Germany. She is also a crowd pleaser. Maybe Nürnberg can be a turning point in her career,” tournament director Sandra Reichel commented.
The remaining two wild cards will be announced later in the week. The WTA International Event will be held from 18 to 25 May 2019. For more information and tickets, please visit the tournaments’s official homepage.
