Doubles World No. 273 Tomas Lipovsek Puches has switched nationality from Argentina to Slovenia to jump at the chance to play Davis Cup for his new country. The 26-year-old’s father is Slovenian but he lives with his mother in Argentina.

Lipovsek Puches clinched seven ITF Pro Circuit titles in singles but is more successful in doubles, winning one ATP Challenger title alongside Federico Coria in Campinas 2016. He lifted two doubles trophies on the ITF World Tennis Tour this season.

Lipovsek Puches has a career high ATP singles ranking of 250 achieved on 25 April 2016. He also has a career high ATP doubles ranking of 200 achieved on 5 March 2018. In February 2016, Lipovsek Puches made his ATP main draw debut at the 2016 Argentina Open, where he received a wild card into the doubles draw partnering Manuel Peña López. They lost in the first round to Guido Pella and Diego Schwartzman.

Lipovsek Puches also competed in the Slovenian Open ATP Challenger in Portoroz last year, teaming up with Slovenia’s Aljaz Radinski. The pair, however, fell in the opening round to Tomislav Draganja and Nino Serdarusic.

“I expect Tomas Lipovsek Puches to help us in doubles, but above all, he will take the pressure off Aljaz Bedene, who had to play both doubles and singles last year,” Slovenia’s Davis Cup captain Miha Mlakar stated in a press release.
