BRAGA, May 10, 2019
Torrential rain washed out all singles third round matches scheduled on Thursday at the Braga Open. Only Dominik Koepfer could advance to the quarterfinal with a walkover, as his opponent Blaz Rola from Slovenia was forced to withdraw from the match due to illness. The No. 6 seed from Germany will next play the winner of the encounter between Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal and Bernabé Zapata Miralles from Spain.
As the doubles matches were moved indoors later in the afternoon, Koepfer yet still stepped into action alongside his partner Mohamed Safwat from Egypt. The unseeded pair upset No. 4 seeds David Perez Sanz of Spain and Sem Verbeek from the Netherlands, rallying 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 in exactly one hour of play.
Kimmer Coppejans from Belgium and Zdenek Kolar from the Czech Republic also advanced to the doubles semi-finals, knocking out No. 2 seeded US-Americans Nathaniel Lammons and Alex Lawson 7-5, 1-6, 10-8. The match lasted one hour and 13 minutes.
Singles action will continue on Friday morning 11 am local time with the remaining third round matches.
