SANTA PONSA, June 6, 2019

Maria Sharapova has informed that she may take part in this year’s Mallorca Open. The WTA International event will be held from 17 to 23 June 2019 at the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club. The 32-year-old Russian is currently on the Spanish island of Mallorca for practice together with her coach Thomas Hogstedt.

“It is an honor for us that Maria Sharapova came to the island. Their participation would be another milestone in the short tournament history of the Mallorca Open. She is one of the most famous and prominent athletes in the world, and we are confident that Sharapova will find the best conditions to get ready for Wimbledon,” organizer Edwin Weindorfer stated in a press release.

Maria Sharapova said: “I like it here, the places are very good. If everything goes well in practice, then I like to accept the wild card.” The decision will be made by the five-time Grand Slam champion over Whitsun holidays. At the beginning of next week, Weindorfer and tournament director Toni Nadal expect a final confirmation from the former World No. 1.

Two wild cards into the main draw have already been awarded to Sabine Lisicki and Andrea Petkovic. The two Germans join top seed Angelique Kerber and compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam at this year’s line-up.
