The second day of the LTA’s Ilkley Trophy was full of surprises, with British teenager Paul Jubb knocking out Brazilian Thiago Monteiro and fellow Brit Katie Swan upsetting second seed Pauline Parmentier.
Jubb took the Brazilian, who is ranked 475 places above him to a third set, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in front of a thrilled Yorkshire crowd. The 19-year-old wild card entry broke Monteiro’s serve three times to prevail after one hour and 42 minutes.

Jubb, currently ranked World No. 579, goes on to play No. 9 seed Dennis Novak of Austria in the third round. Kamil Majchrzak of Poland also advanced to the final 16 at the €137,560 ATP Challenger grass-court event. Then No. 10 seed beat Yuichi Sugita from Japan 7-6(1), 6-3 in one hour and 25 minutes and awaits the winner of the encounter between US-American Bjorn Fratangelo and No. 7 seed Jiri Vesely from the Czech Republic.
Liam Broady’s first-round match against Italy’s Stefano Napolitano, which was suspended Monday night due to poor weather, ended in defeat for the left-handed Briton with the Napolitano winning 7-6(5), 6-2. Another British player, Evan Hoyt, lost to Korean Soon-Woo Kwon 6-0, 6-4.
Swan prevails
In the ITF World Tennis Tour W100 event, 20-year-old Katie Swan had a sensational win on court two, beating the tournament’s No. 2 Pauline Parmentier of France in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4. The wild card entry from Great Britain sent down 11 aces, winning 87 per cent of her first service points to seal victory in one hour and 39 minutes.
Swan will next play defending champion Tereza Simtkova from the Czech Republic, who ousted local favourite Gabriella Taylor 6-3, 7-5. Fellow Brit Holly Staff didn’t fare so well and was beaten 3-6, 1-6 by En Shuo Liang.
