The Levene Gouldin & Thompson (LG&T) Tennis Challenger announced that Noah Rubin of Long Island, New York has been awarded a wild card into the main draw of the 2019 Binghamton Challenger.
Rubin is currently ranked No. 170 in the world and is fresh-off a strong run through qualifying at Wimbledon. The 23-year-old won three matches to make the main draw of Wimbledon for the first time in his career. He was then defeated by 2018 LG&T Tennis Challenger champion Jay Clarke in a tight four set match.
In October 2018, the New York native reached a career-high ranking of No. 125 in the world. He holds five ATP Challenger titles overall (four in singles & one in doubles). This will be Rubin’s third time competing in Binghamton, with his best result coming in 2015 where he reached the second round.
“We are extremely excited to have Noah back in Binghamton and competing in front of a home-state crowd,” said Tournament Director Laurie Bowen. “Noah has had some amazing accomplishments both on and off the court and I can’t wait to see the tennis community in Binghamton come and support this young man.”
Off the court, Rubin has gained attention for his “Behind the Racquet” Instagram account. Rubin and other athletes chronicle the daily grind and difficulties of being a professional athlete. Rubin has opened up about finances, mental health, injuries, and the many other challenges of life on tour. His efforts have been profiled by The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and other media outlets.
Wild cards have also been awarded to 2016 LG&T Tennis Challenger finalist Mitchell Krueger, 2014 champion Sergiy Stakhovsky, John McNally, Strong Kirchheimer and Alexander Ritschard.
Free admission on Monday
Organizers announced on Friday that opening day festivities of the event on Monday, July 22 will be free of admission.
Patrons will be able to enjoy professional tennis in the heart of New York for no cost. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with a feature match at 5:00 p.m. that evening.
“We are extremely excited to be able to give members of the community the chance to come and see world-class tennis for free,” said Tournament Director Laurie Bowen. “You never know who may come through the courts of Binghamton, so I hope to see a lot of people take advantage of this incredible opportunity.”
The tournament is a USTA Pro Circuit & ATP Challenger 80 event hosted at Recreation Park, July 22-28. Defending champion of the tournament is British young gun Jay Clarke.
Admission to the LG&T Tennis Challenger is $3 daily July 23-25 and $6 daily July 26-28. A tournament pass is available for $25 and student tickets are also available at a discounted price. All tickets can be purchased at the gate.
