HAMBURG, August 17, 2019
The German Tennis Federation announced Friday that Daniel Altmaier will compete in the inaugural Tennis Challenger Hamburg presented by Tannenhof. The ATP Challenger event offers a total prize money of €46,600 and will be held indoors at the venue of the Hamburger Tennis-Verbandes e.V from October 21 to 26, 2019.
The 20-year-old NextGen ATP Finals contender from Kempen, who is currently ranked at World No. 409, will be part of the players’ line-up fighting for the title and 80 ATP Ranking points. This year will be the first time since 2003 that an ATP Challenger event will be held in Germany’s second-largest city. Back then, Mario Ancic defeated Rafael Nadal in the final. In 2017 and 2018, the venue hosted an ITF World Tennis Tour tournament.
“We are very happy that following the Hamburg European Open another tennis event will be held here in Hamburg,” said tournament director Mirco Westphal, who is also the chief coordinator for competitive sports and events at the German Tennis Federation DTB.
“It’s great to have another Challenger event on home soil,” Altmaier stated in a press release. “We don’t have to travel so far and it’s always nice to play in front of the home crowd.”
Further German young guns such as Rudolf Molleker, Marvin Möller and Louis Wessels are expected to be part of the entry list. Last year’s ITF-champion Altug Celikbelik of Turkey will also return to Hamburg.
