A rainy Labor Day shortened the first day of play of the Oracle Challenger Series at the Yale Tennis Center, but nonetheless professional tennis made a triumphant return to New Haven, with both qualifying and main draw action underway.

Three US-Americans and one player from Cyprus advanced to the second round of the $162,480 ATP Challenger hard-court event. Noah Rubin defeated Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador 7-6(3), 6-4. The 23-year-old from Long Island, New York converted two of his seven break point chances to secure victory in two hours and 10 minutes. Rubin will next play No. 10 seed Enzo Couacaud of France.

Ryan Shane emerged victorious from the all-US-American encounter with wild card entry Aleks Kovacevic. The 25-year-old from Virginia fired 16 aces, winning 91 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 10 minutes. Up next for Shane will be compatriot and 13th seed Mitchell Krueger.

Daniel Young set a second-round clash with the tournament’s No. 8 Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan. The World No. 197 beat Filip Peliwo of Canada 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 50 minutes.

Petros Chrysochos won the battle of the wild card entries with US-American Dylan King. The 23-year-old from Larnaca, Cyprus didn’t face a break point and capitalized on four of his own 11 chances to finish the encounter in one hour and 23 minutes. Chrysochos will next take on third seed Damir Dzumhur from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
