Munar Leads Strong Spanish Contingent Into Copa Sevilla Quarterfinals

Six Spaniards advanced to the quarterfinals of the LVII Copa Sevilla led by top seed Jaume Munar. The World No. 112 defeated compatriot Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon at the Real Club de Tenis Betis.

Munar converted three of his seven break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 34 minutes. The 22-year-old from Mallorca will next take on veteran Guillermo Garcia Lopez, who rallied past fellow Spaniard Mario Vilella Martinez 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 after two hours and 16 minutes.

Carlos Taberner caused the upset of the day by knocking out No. 4 seed Paolo Lorenzi from Italy. The 16th favourite from Spain remained untroubled during his 6-1, 6-2 win in only 61 minutes. Taberner will next play Inigo Cervantes, who had to go the distance against Alex Molcan from Slovakia. The 29-year-old Spaniard, who is playing his only fourth tournament of the season and is currently ranked World No. 1936, prevailed 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. The third-round encounter lasted one hour and 56 minutes.

Spanish teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz Garfia booked his first quarterfinal spot at Challenger level. The 16-year-old from Murcia fought past No. 7 seed Pedro Martinez of Spain 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Alcaraz Garfia capitalized on five of his 11 break point chances to advance after two hours and 45 minutes. The young gun will next challenge No. 2 seed Salvatore Caruso from Italy.

Kimmer Coppejans of Belgium and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain round out the competitors in the stage of the final eight of the €69,280 ATP Challenger 90 clay-court event.
