CARY, September 13, 2019
With Thursday’s wins, an US-American player is guaranteed to be in the finals of the Atlantic Tire Championships held at Cary Tennis Park.
Tommy Paul easily won his afternoon match to advance to the quarterfinals. The No. 2 seed of the $54,160 ATP Challenger 80 hard-court event defeated University of Virginia’s Brandon Nakashima 7-6(0), 6-4 to secure victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
Paul will next take on the No. 11 seed and fellow US-American Michael Mmoh on Friday. Mmoh’s strong serving was a key factor in his 6-1, 6-4 win over Mikael Torpegaard from Denmark. Other US-Americans in the bottom half of the draw include wildcard Ulises Blanch and JC Aragone.
Thursday night’s featured singles match pitted Noah Rubin against friend Christopher Eubanks. Despite firing 21 aces, 11 in the third set, Eubanks was not able to pull out the win to advance to the quarterfinals. Rubin will face Italy’s top seed Andreas Seppi on Friday evening.
