Emilio Gomez headlined Tuesday’s second-round action of the First Republic Tiburon Challenger held on hard courts at the Tiburon Peninsula Club in California.
The No. 4 from Ecuador rallied past Michail Pervolarakis of Cyprus 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Gomez capitalized on six of of his 15 break point chances to prevail after one hour and 57 minutes. The 27-year-old from Guyaquil will next face No. 15 seed Ernesto Escobedo, who emerged victorious from the all-US-American encounter with Donald Young, winning 6-1, 4-2 when Young was forced to retire due to a left shoulder injury.

Mikael Torpegaard also booked his spot in the third round of the $108,320 ATP Challenger 100 event. The fifth seed fought past Ryan Peniston from Great Britain 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Torpegaard, who clinched his second Columbus Challenger title at Ohio State University earlier this season, withstood 10 aces and broke his opponent’s serve three times to secure victory in one hour and 53 minutes.
The World No. 172 from Denmark will next take on Gonzalo Escobar, who defeated 11th seeded US-American Mitchell Krueger 7-6(7), 6-3 in one hour and 43 minutes.
Thai-Son Kwiatkowski advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Carlos Gomez-Herrera of Spain. The No. 14 seed from the United States awaits the winner of the match between his countrymen Michael Redlicki and the tournament’s third favourite Marcos Giron. The remaining second-round matches will be played on Wednesday.
