Frenchman Corentin Moutet started probably one of his favourite weeks on the ATP Challenger Tour with his first win against compatriot Mathias Bourgue on Tuesday, winning 6-2, 6-1 to make the third round of his home Open Brest Credit Agricole in Brittany, France.
The 2017 champion, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final to lift his maiden Challenger trophy, and this year’s No. 4 seed saved all six break points he faced and capitalized on five of his 13 own break point chances to advance in one hour and 23 minutes. Moutet has secured his only fourth match win since Wimbledon in July and will next take on the winner of the all-French encounter between Quentin Halys and Corentin Denolly.
Jaume Munar, one of four Spaniards in the singles main draw of the €92,040 hard-court event, also booked his spot in the third round. The No. 5 seed eased past Frenchman Elliot Benchetrit 6-3, 6-3 in 66 minutes. Munar will next face either ninth favourite Norbert Gombos from Slovakia or Norwegian Viktor Durasovic.
Top seed Ugo Humbert of France will step into action on Wednesday afternoon. The World No. 63 will play countryman Maxime Janvier. Roberto Carballes Baena, the tournament’s No. 2, will open the day on Court Central by taking on fellow Spaniard Carlos Taberner. The 22-year-old from Valencia fought past Benjamin Bonzi of France 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(2) after two hours and 27 minutes, Tuesday’s longest match.
