ORTISEI, October 24, 2019
Teen sensation Jannik Sinner will end his season on home soil. Organizers of the Sparkassen Challenger Val Gardena Südtirol announced on Thursday that the 18-year-old Italian will return to South Tyrol next month for the 10th edition of the €46,600 ATP Challenger event.
Two years ago, Sinner celebrated here his first match win on the ATP Challenger Tour by beating Luca Giacomini in straight sets. The current World No. 101, who started the year on position 550, won two Challenger titles in 2019 in Bergamo, Italy and Lexington, United States.
“We are very happy to welcome Jannik here in Ortisei,” tournament director Ambros Hofer stated in a press release.
Sinner will also play doubles. The NextGen ATP star has been awarded a wild card alongside his 15-year-old partner Lorenzo Ferri, who also practices at the Piatti Tennis Academy in Bordighera. Local favourite Andreas Seppi, however, will skip his home tournament, as the champion of 2013 and 2014 will represent Italy at the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid.
The entry list of the hard-court event is led by Italy’s Stefano Travaglia, who has played his best season so far and is currently ranked at World No. 83. Travaglia’s compatriot Salvatore Caruso, who recently lifted his second Challenger career trophy at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona, will also come to Ortisei.
