MONTPELLIER, February 9, 2020

Frenchman Gael Monfils clinched his third title on home soil in Montpellier by winning Sunday’s final of the Open Sud de France against Vasek Pospisil from Canada. The top seed as well as 2010 and 2014 champion of the ATP Tour 250 tournament won 7-5, 6-3.

Monfils saved all four break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own four break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 37 minutes.

“It has been a great week. I am very pleased about my performance today,” said Monfils. “I think I played very solid again and I was very happy with the way I handled the key moments.”

The 33-year-old lifted his ninth career trophy and pocketed €90,010 in prize money as well as 250 ATP Ranking points.

“I am more than happy to win again in France,” said Monfils. “This is the third time [in Montpellier] and hopefully I can have some more [success].”

Pospisil was seeking his first triumph on the ATP Tour in his second final. The 29-year-old defeated second seed David Goffin from Belgium in three sets to reach the title match.

“It was an incredible week,” said Pospisil. “I had great wins and I feel like I am definitely improving week-by-week. I will try to rest now, take a couple of days easy and get ready for the next event.”

Cacic/Pavic take first team title

Nikola Cacic of Serbia and Mate Pavic from Croatia completed their team debut week by winning the doubles title. The unseeded duo defeated Dominic Inglot from Great Britain and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 29 minutes.

“It is the first time we were playing together,” said Pavic. “Considering that we were playing for the first time, I think we played good matches… We actually played all the matches pretty good. There was some good quality tennis and, in general, it was a good week.“

Cacic added: “At the last moment, he asked me to play… It was a great week. I think I played very good and I helped him a lot. He has much more experience in doubles. Going home with the title, I couldn’t be more happy.”
