HAMBURG, February 12, 2020
World No. 34 Jan-Lennard Struff is the second player to be confirmed for the 2020 Hamburg European Open. The 29-year-old German joins Australian Open runner-up Dominic Thiem at the Rothenbaum tournament held on July 11 to 19.
“I am extremely happy to compete in Hamburg again this year. I can’t wait to play on the new Center Court,” Struff stated in a press release on Wednesday.
Struff played the best season of his career so far in 2019. The young dad, whose son Henri is just under one year old, advanced to the Round of 16 at the French Open and reached a new career-high at World No. 33 in the ATP Rankings.
“Jan-Lennard Struff has matured into one of the world’s best players last season,” Hamburg European Open tournament director Sandra Reichel said. “Jan-Lennard doesn’t just play aggressive and very attractive tennis. The fans also love him for his likeable, cool character.”
Struff will return to the ATP 500 tournament in Northern Germany for the 12th time, seeking a spot in the quarterfinals for the first time. After a first-round win over Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, the Warstein native fell to Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round last year.
“The Rothenbaum tournament is such a nice event and I am always happy to play in front of a home crowd,” said Struff, who has already spent a few vacation days between the Elbe and the Alster river. “I just love the city,” he pointed out.
