The first round at the US-$ 50,000 JSM Challenger of Champaign-Urbana concluded on Tuesday.
Second seed Austin Krajicek won the all-US-American-affair against qualifier Raymond Sarmiento 6-4, 6-4. The world number 101 from Florida saved all of the nine break points he faced and converted two of his own to prevail in one hour and 14 minutes. Krajicek will take on Adrien Bossel next.
Frances Tiafoe, who finished as runner-up in Knoxville last Sunday, knocked out fifth seed Alejandro Falla, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The 17-year-old US-American rallied back from a set down, winning 67% of his first service points to seal victory in one hour and 34 minutes. Tiafoe will face fellow countryman Eric Quigley next.
Knoxville’s champion continued his winning streak in Champaign, when Daniel Evans defeated seventh seed Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3 , 6-3. The 25-year-old Brit, who captured his first ATP Challenger title in six years last Sunday, hit seven aces and won 76% of his first service points to set a second round clash with Taylor Fritz.
