The schedule was fully packed with all of the second round matches taking place on Wednesday at the € 42,500 ATP Challenger Trofeo Città di Brescia.
Igor Sijsling upset top-seed Sergiy Stakhovsky, winning 7-6, 6-2. The world number 167 from the Netherlands withstood eight aces from the Ukrainian, saved both break points he faced and won 82% of his first service points to advance after one hour and five minutes. Sijsling will face Farrukh Dustov next. The 29-year-old from Uzbekistan smashed 28 aces and gained one break to overcome Lukas Lacko 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in two hours and six minutes.
With third seed Ilya Marchenko another Ukrainian advanced to the quarterfinals. The 28-year-old Donetsk resident ousted Andrea Arnaboldi 7-6, 6-4. Marchenko didn’t face a break point and won 90% of his first service points to close the encounter after one hour and 28 minutes.
Luca Vanni knocked out fifth seed and Eckental runner-up Benjamin Becker through a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 victory. The 30-year-old Italian fired 22 aces, saved all of the three break points he faced and capitalized on two of his own to finish the match after two hours and 15 minutes.
“This was one of the best matches this season. Two weeks ago, I lost to Youzhny at the same score. Now my level is very high and I proved it today,” told Vanni, who will take on Norbert Gombos next. The Slovakian defeated Italian qualifier Roberto Marcora 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 31 minutes.
Marco Chiudinelli rallied back from a set down to overcome seventh seed Michael Berrer, winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The Swiss qualifier saved eight of the 11 break points he faced and converted four of his own to prevail in one hour and 52 minutes. Chiudinelli will take on Mirza Basic next, who beat Bulgarian lucky loser Dimitar Kuzmanov 6-3, 6-4 in 61 minutes.
