“I didn’t expect such a result,” Zapata Miralles said. “I played really well against an opponent, who feels comfortable on clay. I practiced well and played a perfect match. I feel good here on the court in Todi, which is not taken for granted after the long break.”
The World No. 212 will next take on No. 5 seed Facundo Bagnis of Argentina, who defeated 18-year-old Italian wild card entry Giulio Zeppieri 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and a half.
Earlier on Thursday at the Tennis Club Todi 1971, Yannick Hanfmann came back from a set down to overcome the challenge of teenager Lorenzo Musetti from Italy, rallying 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 7 seed of Germany sent down four aces and won 83 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in one hour and 40 minutes.
In his third quarterfinal on the 2020 ATP Challenger Tour after Burnie in Australia and on home soil at the Koblenz Open, Hanfmann awaits No. 2 seed Marco Cecchinato. The 27-year-old local favourite eased past Juan Pablo Ficovich of Argentina 6-3, 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 15 minutes.
