Campinas Challenger: Quarterfinals Are Set

The quarterfinals of the Campeonato Internacional de Tenis, held at the Sociedade Hípica de Campinas in Brazil, are set. Two all-Argentine clashes headlined Thursday’s second round action with Francisco Cerundolo battling past Facundo Mena 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(0).

Twenty-two-year-old Cerundolo, a two-time ATP Challenger champion this season at the Split Open in Croatia as well as the Guayaquil Challenger in Ecuador, saved one match point and outpointed his compatriot 112-107 after two hours and 29 minutes.

Cerundolo will next take on No. 3 seed Facundo Bagnis, who defeated fellow Argentine Renzo Olivo 6-1, 7-5. The World No. 126 from Buenos Aires prevailed after one hour and 32 minutes.

In other action, No. 4 seed Daniel Elahi Galan, winner of this year’s Lima Challenger in Peru, fought past Argentine qualifier Sebastian Baez 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5). The 24-year-old Colombian won three points more than his opponent to secure victory in two hours and 30 minutes. Up next for Galan will be No. 8 seed Dmitry Popko from Kazakhstan, who beat Brazilian Joao Menezes 6-2, 7-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 37 minutes.
