Twenty-two-year-old Sofia Kenin from the United States today was named the WTA Player of the Year for 2020, as voted on by members of the international media. She becomes the eighth US-American to earn the WTA’s Player of the Year honor since it began in 1977, joining Serena Williams (7 times), Martina Navratilova (7), Lindsay Davenport (2), Tracy Austin, Chris Evert, Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati.
Kenin, from Pembroke Pines, Fla., won the 2020 Australian Open in February, her first Grand Slam title, and reached the finals at the French Open in October. She was one of only two players to reach the second week of all three Grand Slam events in 2020 (Petra Kvitova), and finished the year at her career-high world ranking of No. 4 as the top-ranked US-American.
She won her maiden Grand Slam title at the @AustralianOpen.
