Alexander Bublik caused the upset of the day in Monday’s quarterfinals of the Antalya Open by knocking out top seed and World No. 10 Matteo Berrettini of Italy 7-6(6), 6-4. The eighth seed from Kazakhstan struck eight aces and won 77 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 31 minutes.

“Getting to a semi-final in the first week of the season, and beating a couple of top players — Matteo is a Top 10 player. It’s a great start,” said Bublik, who will next play French veteran Jeremy Chardy.

The 33-year-old saved two match points in the tie-break of the final set to overcome No. 5 seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(8) after two hours and 36 minutes, the longest match of the day.

It was a difficult match and I was a little bit tired too from yesterday,” said Chardy, who defeated Fabio Fognini in three tie-break sets on Sunday. “He (Jan-Lennard) had two match points at the end, so it was difficult. But I am happy to be in the semi-finals.”

In other action, No. 2 seed David Goffin of Belgium eased past Stefano Travaglio from Italy 6-3, 6-2 in 62 minutes to face No. 4 seed Alex de Minaur in the stage of the final four. The Australian beat sixth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia 6-2, 6-4. The encounter lasted one hour and 14 minutes.
