The BMW Open will return to the ATP Tour next month after a one-year hiatus due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. This was confirmed by the organizers of the clay-court event in a virtual press conference on Wednesday. The International Bavarian Championships will be held on April 26 to May 2 at the venue of the MTTC Iphitos in Munich.
Zverev returns to Munich
Germany’s No. 1 Alexander Zverev and Italian teen sensation World No. 32 Jannik Sinner are the first two players confirmed for the ATP 250 tournament. World No. 7 Zverev lifted the trophy in Munich in 2017 and 2018.
“I am looking forward to the upcoming events, as it will be an exciting season for me,” the 23-year-old Hamburg native told BMW Open tournament director Patrik Kühnen in a video call.
Zverev will make his seventh appearance in the capital city of Bavaria.
“At the age of 16, I played the first time in Munich. I was awarded a wild card and lost to Jürgen Melzer. I always enjoy playing in Germany and hope to win the title here a third time this year,” he said.

Organizers are ready
At this time, it is not sure, if spectators will be allowed to attend the tournament. Organizers MMP Event announced that they are prepared for all three scenarios: running the event with full-capacity crowd, less spectators as well as playing behind closed doors.
A final decision will be made in accordance with the local authorities and the protocol will include appropriate safety and hygiene measures.
