Last Monday, Daniil Medvedev became the first player other than Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Andy Murray to be ranked in the top two of the FedEx ATP Rankings since 2005.
The 25-year-old Russian makes his debut as the World No. 2 at the Miami Open presented by Itau, where he is the top seed, but Medvedev says he feels no added pressure at the season’s first ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
“I feel like it just gives me some energy boost,” says Medvedev. “I just want to play better and better to prove to myself I deserve this and hopefully I can show some great tennis in Miami.”
Medvedev is in the same half as the draw as three-time Masters 1000 champion and No. 3 seed Alexander Zverev, who on Saturday defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Acapulco final.
Tsitsipas, the second seed, may need to overcome the likes of Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman, Denis Shapovalov or last week’s Dubai titlist Aslan Karatsev in the bottom half of the draw.
#NextGenATP Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, Michael Mmoh, Hugo Gaston and Jack Draper were awarded wild cards into the main draw of the tournament.
