Frenchman Mathias Bourgue and Polish qualifier Kacper Zuk will meet in Sunday’s singles final of the €44,820 Split Open 2. The ATP Challenger clay-court tournament is being held at the Tennis Club Firule in Split, Croatia’s second-largest city.
Zuk, who fell in the stage of the final four to eventual champion Blaz Rola at the same place last week, fought past Elias Ymer from Sweden 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. The 22-year-old Mazowiecki native capitalized on eight of his 10 break-point chances to prevail after one hour and 54 minutes.
Later in the day, Bourgue benefited from the retirement of his compatriot Quentin Halys, who was forced to stop playing due to a left foot injury after losing the opening set in the tie-break.
Following seven title wins on the ITF World Tennis Tour, Zuk is seeking his maiden Challenger trophy. The World No. 212 will face Bourgue for the first time. The 27-year-old from Avignon could clinch his third Challenger career title, his first since Cherbourg, France four years ago.
Walkow/Zielinski earn doubles title
In other action, Szymon Walkow and Jan Zielinski took the doubles title. The unseeded duo from Poland beat the all-French tandem of Gregoire Barrere and Albano Olivetti 6-2, 7-5. The final lasted 68 minutes.
By celebrating their first team title on the ATP Challenger Tour, Walkow and Zielinski took away from the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea €2,670 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Doubles Ranking points.
