After a one-year respite due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Citi Open will return to the United States capital city of Washington, D.C. this summer.
The Citi Open, an ATP Tour 500-series event, will take place from July 31 to August 8 at Rock Creek Park. in northwest Washington, with fans in attendance. Qualifying will be held July 31-Aug. 1 with the main draw to follow Aug. 2-8.
The tournament has been Washington, D.C.’s premier pro tennis event since its founding in 1969. Past champions include Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and Juan Martín del Potro. Defending champion is Nick Kyrgios, who defeated Daniil Medvedev in the 2019 final, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).

As one of the first major sporting events returning to the Washington, D.C. metro area, this year’s Citi Open fan capacity will be restricted to 50 percent, as set by the U.S. Park Service. The William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center’s main stadium normally seats 7,500.
“We are thrilled to announce the return of the Citi Open to Washington, D.C. this summer,” said Mark Ein, CEO of MDE Tennis, in a statement Thursday. “Coming off a difficult 15 months, we can’t wait to bring back together our community, fans and the best tennis players in the world for a memorable week of competition and celebration in the nation’s capital.”
The Citi Open is part of the US Open Series and is one of the lead-up tournaments to the US Open in New York. This year’s event will take place directly following the Tokyo Olympic Games tennis tournament, which is scheduled July 24-Aug. 1.
