“It was tough for me to stay on the court today, physically and mentally,” Celikbilek said. “I knew that I had a good chance today because I played him twice in the past. I won the last one and he the one before but the matches were always close. I stayed focused on the court today. It’s absolutely amazing.”

Later in the afternoon, Halys knocked out No. 3 seed Emilio Gomez from Ecuador, the highest-ranked player left in the singles draw, 6-4, 6-4. The World No. 197 from Boulogne-Billancourt capitalized on three of his six break-point opportunities to prevail after one hour and 20 minutes.

Halys is bidding for his third ATP Challenger Tour career title, his first since Nanchnang, China in April 2018. Celikbilek could lift his maiden Challenger trophy after five title wins on the ITF Pro Circuit. Halys won the only previous meeting between the two in the first round of the Recanati Challenger in Italy four years ago.
