Nicolas Alvarez Varona, who was born in May 2001, gained attention six years ago when he broke all precocity records previously established on the ATP Tour by earning his first ATP point at the age of 14 at a Futures tournament in Oviedo. No other player in history had ever managed to win a point so young in age.
Since then, the Burgos native has clinched one title on the ITF Pro Circuit by lifting the trophy on home soil in Benicarlo in November last year. Alvarez Varona currently sits at a career-high ranking of World No. 487.
Twenty-year-old Carlos Matarredona Valor from Alicante as well as teenagers Iñaki Montes de la Torre and Antonio Prat of Navarra were granted a wild card into the qualifying draw.
