Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera caused the upset of the day by knocking out top seed Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) in Friday’s quarterfinals at the Rhein Asset Open presented by B&B Hotels in Meerbusch. The World No. 193 from Chile withstood seven aces from the in-form German and broke Altmaier’s serve two times to prevail after two hours and 10 minutes.

Twenty-three-year-old Barrios Vera, who has captured seven trophies on the ITF Pro Circuit and is seeking his first title win on the ATP Challenger Tour after losing two finals in Santiago and Almaty earlier this season, will next take on Robin Haase. The Dutch veteran rallied from a set down to overcome German Mats Moraing 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. The 34-year-old from The Hague struck 10 aces and won 68 per cent of his first-service points to advance after one hour and 54 minutes.

In the bottom half of the draw, Botic van den Zandschulp also had to go the distance against Slovakian Lukas Klein. The No. 3 seed from the Netherlands converted three of his six break-point opportunities to secure a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory in one hour and 54 minutes. Up next for van den Zandschulp will be Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The fifth seed from Argentina outlasted 2018 Meerbusch champion Filip Horansky of Slovakia 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. The World No. 253 won six points more than his opponent to prevail after one hour and 53 minutes.

In Saturday’s doubles final, No. 4 seeds Dustin Brown of Germany and Robin Haase will play the all-Polish combination of Szymon Walkow and Jan Zielinski. Action will start at 12:30 pm local time.
