STARNBERG, September 1, 2021 (Guest post)
Now that the US Open is underway, the anticipation of watching has brought many exciting spectators to the courts both online and in-person at the game to be a part of the pressure that will be taking place on the outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.
Who should you be keeping an eye on? We have a few of the exceptionally talented hand-picked players below for you to watch out for either for entertainment purposes or if you’ve decided to indulge in some tennis betting of your own. From August 30th to September 12th, you will be sitting on the edge of your seats. We look at a few players from both the Men’s singles category, as well as the women.
Men’s Singles Category
Denis Shapovalov
As one of the highly-rated Canadian players, Shapovalov has continuously turned heads in matches since July from his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon where he defeated Andy Murray, Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista Agut, to become the champion. At only 22 years old, he is one of the players to keep a keen eye on during the next match.
Alexander Zverev
Already possessing an Olympic Gold medal is Zverev, who is in the hopes of getting over the line at the oncoming major tournament. The German who beat the finalist last year, and won the ATP Masters event in Cincinnati is at the centre of the game amongst all the other players in proving his skills once again.
Matteo Berrettini
The Wimbledon runner up and Queen’s Club champion, Matteo Berrettini, suffered from a thigh injury but is now back and up for some more competition at the US open 2021. Known for a threatening serve, and a destructive forehand, he will be doing some serious damage to some of this opponent’s gameplay.
Women’s Singles Category
Naomi Osaka
In the women’s tournament, the four-time Grand Slam winner and Japanese professional tennis player have been ranked the number 1 most lucrative player by the WTA. Even though she withdrew from the French Open and took a pass on the Wimbledon games, she has now returned to gain her title back and to carry the Olympic torch once again.
Angelique Kerber
Another woman to look out for is Angelique Kerber, who discovered her best form during the grass-court season and won the Bad Homburg. Although she lost against Barty she has continued to carry her momentum throughout Cincinnati and has beat against many other famous names including Elina Svitolina, Petra Kvitova, Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko, back in 2016, and now has a shot at doing it again in New York.
Jennifer Brady
America will be keeping their eye on 26-year-old Brady, to bring the victory home. As the Australia runner-up to Osaka in February and the semi-finalist last year, she could just be the next champion in the coming series.
These are just a few of the many exceptional players who have put in their time, effort and an immense amount of training on the courts. There are many other players that you can check on the official website to see whom to watch.
