Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic won his first title since February 2020 on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Norbert Gombos from Slovakia in the 8th Open de Vendée singles final in Mouilleron-Le-Captif in France.

The No. 2 seed of the €66,640 ATP Challenger Tour tournament struck nine aces, won 86 per cent of his first-service points and broke his opponent two times to prevail after one hour and 13 minutes.

“Congratulations to Norbert! It’s not the first time that I’ve played against him and every time it’s been close matches. Thank you also to my team: my coach, my wife, my children. A huge thank you for their daily support. They do their best to allow me to play as well as possible,” Vesely said.

“It is a magnificent tournament on the Challenger circuit. Thank you to the audience for coming. It feels good to play in front of so many people after a season behind closed doors. Thanks to all of you for your support!”

By lifting his eighth ATP Challenger trophy, in addition to his two triumphs on the ATP Tour, Vesely pocketed €9,200 in prize money as well as 90 ATP Ranking points.

“Congratulations to Jiri for a great week here and good luck for the future,” Gombos said. “A huge thank you to the tournament director and to the entire organization for making this tournament such a great event. To me it’s called Challenger, but it could easily be an ATP 250. That’s why I hope to come back next year. It’s really awesome.”
