For the second consecutive week, the Cerundolo siblings headline the field at the $52,080 Dove Men & Care Legión Sudamericana Challenger Santiago hosted by the the Club Deportivo Palestino.
Top seed Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who fell in the first round in Chile last week to Nicolas Kicker, won his opening match against Julian Lenz from Germany 6-3, 6-3 on Monday. The 19-year-old World No. 103 saved all three break points he faced and capitalized on three of his own 10 break-point chances to advance after one hour and 20 minutes.
Cerundolo will next take on fellow Argentine Pedro Cachin, who defeated unranked 18-year-old local wild card entry Benjamin Torres Fernandez 6-3, 6-4.
Francisco Cerundolo leads the bottom half of the draw and booked his second-round spot following a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Argentine alternate Facundo Diaz Acosta on Tuesday. The World No. 110 won 61 per cent of the total points played to prevail after one hour and 17 minutes. Up next for Cerundolo will be Hernan Casanova from Argentina, who eliminated US-American alternate Nick Chappell 6-3, 6-4.
Last week’s Santiago champion Juan Pablo Varillas also achieved a straight-sets victory over Argentine Facundo Mena. The No. 3 seed from Peru broke his rival’s serve five times to prevail 6-4, 6-2 after one hour and 39 minutes. Varillas will next face Czech youngster Dalibor Srvcina, who eased past qualifier Diego Hidalgo from Ecuador.
