The ATP Challenger Tour is back in Colombia for the first time since October 2017 and for the first time since September that year back in the country’s capital city. The $52,080 DirecTV Open Bogota is being held on clay this week at the Carmel Club in Bogota.
The field is led by home favourite and World No. 107 Daniel Elahi Galan. The top seed, however, lost in the second round on Wednesday to Austrian veteran Gerald Melzer 7-6(5), 6-2. The 31-year-old Vienna native withstood nine aces and broke Galan’s serve two times to prevail after one hour and 43 minutes.
Melzer will next take on Nicolas Mejia of Colombia, who defeated Lucas Catarina from Monaco 6-4, 7-5 after one hour and 49 minutes.

No. 2 seed Daniel Altmaier remains the highest-ranked player left in the singles draw. The World No. 110 from Germany opened his title bid with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Czech youngster Dalibor Svrcina on Tuesday. Altmaier capitalized on four of his 10 break-point chances to advance after one hour and 21 minutes.
The 23-year-old from Kempen, who is coached by former Argentine professional Francisco Yunis, will next play Alexis Galarneau of Canada.
Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida booked his spot in the quarterfinal following a hard-fought 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-2 victory over Colombian Alejandro Gonzalez after two hours and 20 minutes. The 20-year-old will next take on Dutchman Jesper de Jong, who edged out Ecuadorian Roberto Quiroz 7-6(5), 7-6(6). The encounter lasted one hour and 40 minutes.
Thursday’s second-round matches will complete the quarterfinal line-up.
